Personal goals: setting and achieving them

Posted by chica with issues under personal development issues

I think that goal setting is an integral part of personal development. I think you have to create your own personal road map so that you know where you’re going and where you’ve been. This is a good way to make sure that you don’t waste a lot of time and effort headed down the wrong path. It also helps you to stay focused so that you don’t veer off track but keep forging on towards achieving your goal.

An important thing to remember when setting goals is to be realistic. Otherwise you are simply setting yourself up for failure.

You should also have multiple small goals instead of only a few large goals. This way you can achieve many small victories as you make your way towards the end goal. Breaking up larger goals into smaller goals helps to keep you motivated as you achieve the smaller goals.

I find it helpful to have a timeline in mind when setting goals. This is a great way to make sure you do not leave something on the back burner for too long.

Make to-do lists that relate to your goals so that you can focus. By keeping a list you won’t feel overwhelmed about what you should do next because you’ll just have to look at the next number on your list.

Remind yourself of what has been accomplished and what is yet to be done. By this, I mean put your to-do lists on big sheets of paper on your walls. This way you can be reminded of what you have already accomplished as well as what else you need to do to reach your goal. It also makes for some interesting conversation when people visit, which leads to accountability - one of the best motivators.

Review your goals every so often. This is a great way to check your progress and to re-evaluate what is important to you. You might find that something you were working towards is no longer of any importance to you. Or you may see that you are way behind schedule and need to focus more.

Remember to write out your goals in the order you want to achieve them. This way they are real and you can even tack them up on the wall as a constant reminder. Just remember to use positive wording. Instead of saying “Don’t eat like a cow” say “Remember to eat healthy and take better care of my body.”
