Making lemonade out of lemons at work

Posted by chica with issues under job, career, school related issues

For whatever reason, there are times in our lives where we are working a job that we dislike because we have to. We might have a mortgage, kids to feed, or even just ourselves to feed. Whatever the reason, it happens to a lot of people. So, what do you do when you have to go to a place every day that makes you wanna throw up a little in your mouth?

  1. Find a friend. So, you hate the place and a trained goat could do the work? See if you can’t find a likeminded individual that you can bond with about more positive things.  Unless you’re in a teensy place, there has to be at least one new friend you can make!
  2. Take your breaks. By all means take some time for yourself. No sense in sitting at your desk feeling sorry for yourself. Do yoga in the stairwell, read a book outside under a tree or go for a walk. Just getting away from your desk will make it a little more bearable and they day will go a little faster.
  3. Try to gain new skills. Instead of brooding about the mind-numbing parts of your job, look around and see if someone has a skill that they can teach you. Try to focus a skill that would be a marketable asset to your resume.
  4. Decorate. Office lighting is horrible, but what’s even worse are those drab cubicle walls. Spice up your work area a bit by bringing in photos, candles and other little items of joy.
  5. Tick-tock, tick-tock. Instead of listening to the clock tick away the day, bring in some music to listen to. Many offices allow people to listen to mp3 players or to cds through their computer. Just remember to keep it at a reasonable volume so as to not annoy others.
  6. Remember your goal. Instead of obsessing about how miserable you are, remember why you are there. Chances are pretty good that you are there for a reason, so focus on accomplishing that goal. For instance, I am at a job I do not like because I am trying to pay down my debt by February. Eye on the prize, eye on the prize!
  7. If all else fails, bake! Bring in some goodies for your co-workers. They’ll be in a good mood because of it, which should rub off on you. And if it doesn’t at least you’ll get to eat something yummy - just remember to make something you enjoy!

Do you have any other tips for getting through a long day at a job you don’t like? If so, drop me a comment!

Loved your post your article. Those were all some excellent suggestions and creatie approaches. Another idea is to try some aromatherapy. Perhaps you can place your favorite candle on an electric candle warmer. Or put a drop or two of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and take a whiff. Lavender and orange are just two examples of essential oils that can lift or balance your mood. The Lemonade Coach at http://www.thelemonadecoach.com has some wonderful scripture that can lift your mood, as well.
