Should 18 year olds be allowed to drink alcohol?
Posted by chica with issues under health and wellness issues
Apparently there is a growing grassroots movement to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to only 18.
The argument seems to be two part.
- Teens are still drinking but it’s underground so the drinking age should be lowered because it put them at a risk because there is no adult supervision.
- If an 18 year old is old enough to drive, vote and go to war then they should be able to drink a beer.
Let’s think about this “logic” for a moment. I’ll start with #2. Yes, an 18 year old can legally drive, vote and go to war but do we really want an 18 year old to be able to do all those things with a beer in hand? What was not mentioned is that 18 years olds are also young enough to still be in high school, around kids that are not 18. Hmm, sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me.
And, argument #1 - why would anyone in their right mind think that lowering the legal drinking age would make teens want to down a cold one with a parent or other adult? I mean, honestly.

We had a discussion about this in college once. It was kind of interesting. On the one hand, there really isn’t a (logically) valid argument for lowering the drinking age. At the same time, there isn’t one for keeping the drinking age 21 either.
