Panel interviews - not as bad as it sounds
Earlier this week I had a job interview that consisted of a panel interview. When I got the call to schedule the interview I was told that it would be a panel interview, to which I had an internal “eek” moment. Prior to this interview I have never had a panel interview. In fact, I have only had one interview where more than one person was present at the same time and it was just two people. This panel interview was going to be at least four people. Yikes.
To say I wasn’t pretty nervous about it would be a lie.
In fact I was sorta terrified. I mean, wow, talk about intimidating. I was expecting to go into a room where at least four people were seated behind a long table and I was left to sit in a lone chair in the middle of the floor in front of them. Let’s just say I was in ‘my worst nightmare’ mode whenever I was thinking about this interview. The closer it got the more I did not want to go.
But I did go.
Guess what? It wasn’t that bad! In fact, it was easier and less nerve wracking than a regular interview! And I did not get left in a chair in the middle of the floor with everyone else behind a long table. The panel interview was only four people and it took place in a conference room. They had me sit at the head of the table and two of them sat on each side of me. They took turns asking me questions in no real order.
It actually seemed more laid back than most interviews that I have been to. And to think, I was worried for nothing.
In case you’re wondering, I did get a call back after the interview that they liked me and I have been asked to submit a writing sample so that they can make a decision.
