Working out - quantity vs quality?

Posted by chica with issues under health and wellness issues

I have only recently begun to focus on taking better care of my body. I made a resolution of sorts that this is the only body I have got so I really need to focus on things like eating better and working out. I decided this a few months back. I suppose it is a new year’s resolution of sorts, only a few months late. Clearly I need to work on my procrastination, eh?

Until my recent unemployment I have not had a whole lot of time to devote to working out and getting fit. I have a gym membership and it is just down the street. So, going there is no big issue as it is super close. It is other things that keep me from getting there - like dirty dishes, having to take the car to get it worked on and so on. So, what I would do before is try to make up for missing a week of going to the gym by pushing myself really hard on the one day that I was there. I’m talking about 45 minutes of max incline and going as fast as I could.

Not the brightest idea I have had, is it?

So, as time wore on and I started to get more serious about taking care of my body I started reading all kinds of fitness magazines and websites. That is when I discovered how it is better to go to the gym a few times a week for 20 minutes than to spend an hour one day a week pushing yourself to the max. But when I am at the gym it is easy to look around and see a lot of people that are clearly pushing it to the max.

So, now I am all about quality workouts, regardless of the length of time, as opposed to long hardcore workouts.

Just yesterday I was reading in the new Women’s Health magazine (I think) about a recent study that was done on people that took fish oil daily and worked out versus those that did not take fish oil and worked out. The conclusion of the study was that the people that took the fish oil lost an average of something like 3 more pounds than the people that did not take the fish oil.

    I think it’s consistency/quality that matters more…

Me, I go on a lot of walks, and try not to use the gym until it’s winter and I’m forced to…

Consistency - that’s the word I was looking for when I was writing this post! :)

I agree with you. It is kind of like I discovered when I started eating healthy - it’s more about building up a consistent habit instead of just doing something for a period of time until you reach a goal and then abandoning it.

I like to think of it as kind of a life makeover :)
