Liar, liar, pants on fire…
Just a few nights ago I got around to watching the series premiere of Pushing Daisies that I had recorded. At one point during the episode the main character is lying to someone and is asked why his eye is twitching. Then the other guy tells him that people’s eyes twitch when they are lying. So, I got to thinking - do I know any eye twitchers? I mean, one of my brothers is a pathological liar and I do not recall him being particularly twitchy.
For me, one of the easiest ways to tell when someone is lying to me is when they start giving me too much info. For instance, let’s say I am a friend of yours and I invite you over for a dinner party. Secretly you think my cooking is rubbish and coming to my dinner party is the last thing you want to do. On the same note, you do not want to hurt my feelings because we are friends. So, you decide to lie about why you can’t make it.
You can simply tell me, “Oh, sorry, I have other plans on Friday so I can’t make it.” If you told me this then I would think nothing of it and just find it a downer that you couldn’t make it.
On the other hand, if you tell me something like, “Oh, I’d love to but I have to take Bill’s cat over to his mother’s house. You have no idea how attached she gets to things like that. And I don’t have to be there until 8:30 pm but sometimes it takes so long with the traffic. And they could be doing road construction. So, I would come to your dinner party and just cut out early but I do not want to chance being late. And I was going to swing by Macy’s on my way to pick up a dress that I put on hold, because they will only hold stuff for 2 hours. You understand, right?”
See the difference? And of course if someone that we know really well is the person lying to us then it is even easier to know when they are lying.
I once read that you can also tell when someone is lying just by the direction that their eyes go. If they are looking right then they are remembering and if they are looking left then they are creating. This is a fun thing to observe when you see celebrities and politicians on TV being asked questions like “Did you cheat on your wife” and so on. You should try it!
