UPS and their credit card policy

I do a lot of shipping of various things so I have an account with both UPS and FedEx. I signed up initially through an organization that I was a member of as it allowed me to get a discount on shipping. In my past experience, FedEx has usually been the cheaper of the two, and so it has been the one that I have used the most. I primarily have used UPS for international shipping.

I opened both of the accounts about a year and a half ago.

I have never had any billing issues with FedEx. I have a credit card on file with them so that when I ship something it gets paid automatically. And they send me an email about a week before the payment hits so that I can review it.

UPS, however, is another story.

I just got my credit card statement and noticed a $10.18 charge from UPS on it. I haven’t shipped anything UPS in about a year. And this is the third time that something has gotten charged to my account that I did not ship with them. So, like the last two times I call them up to tell them how I have this charge but did not ship anything. Their reps are always polite and always tell me that they can reverse the charge. This time though I asked about getting that credit card taken off the account. See, when I log into my UPS account online it tells me that there is no credit card on file, but clearly there is if it has been charged three time in error.

So, the girl tells me that I have to talk to the credit card department for that to be taken care of. She gives me the number and I call them. They, too, are very nice. The girl I get in the credit card department looks over my account and comes back with this zinger –

“I see that you have gotten 4 invoices on your account, and unfortunately we can’t remove the credit card until you have 25 invoices on the account.”

Uh, what? I tell her that 3 of the past 4 invoices have been charges that were not mine.

It didn’t matter.  There apparently was no work around this little problem. So, I decided to eliminate the problem.

“Can we just terminate that account then? Because I don’t want to have to call you guys 21 more times before I can get that credit card taken off the account.”

Luckily, there was no invoice limit rule about closing your account with UPS.  Unfortunately though, it looks like I might have to call them again. See, this all happened last Friday. And that credit I was expecting still hasn’t shown up. Maybe I’ll give them till this Friday.
