Get free college tuition!

Want to save some cash on higher education expenses? Why not look for a tuition free college? I know it sounds like a bit of a scam but there are actually a few totally free colleges in the U.S.

These free schools are sometimes known as full scholarship colleges and I first found out them last week from an article in Business Week. I really wish I had known that these types of schools existed back when I was preparing to go to college.

If you are wondering how these schools can offer a free education to students you are not alone. I wondered the same thing. Apparently there are a few different ways that it works. Some may have a mandatory work study program that you have to do in exchange for the free tuition. Some of the schools have large endowments given to the schools by benefactors. For example, the Cooper Union, a four-year college specializing in engineering, art, and architecture, has an endowment worth more than $600 million.

I think it is pretty amazing that these types of schools even exist. Of course there are only a few of them and most of them are specialized in a certain field – engineering.

Here is a list of the colleges as listed in the article slideshow:

  1. Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, KY
  2. Berea College in Berea, KY
  3. City University of New York’s Teacher Academy in New York, NY
  4. College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, MO
  5. Cooper Union in New York, NY
  6. Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA
  7. Deep Springs College inDeep Springs, CA
  8. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA
  9. Webb Institute in Glen Cove, NY
  10. and they had the military listed, which I don’t think really counts!

It’s great that these opportunities exist but I’m willing to bet that most of them have very competitive admissions. I remember this being the case with Cooper Union and the military academies (I think you need the endorsement of two congressmen?).

Yes, I think I remember reading that there was a lot of competition at Cooper Union.
