What do you want to be when you grow up?
I am 29 years old and still trying to find out what I want to be when I grow up. And I know that I am not the only “adult’ that feels this way. Finding out what makes you happy is not an easy task, especially as far as a career is concerned.
Sometimes it seems like it is an easier task to list out all of the things we do not want as opposed to what we want. It’s kind of like working backwards to get where you want to be.
One thing that I think is a good starting point for figuring out what direction you want to do is to write your personal mission statement. I actually did this myself a few years ago when I was taking a ‘leadership’ class in college. We were reading Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and writing our own personal mission statement was one of the homework assignments. I actually still have mine and I take a peek at it now and again to see if I am on course or if my priorities have shifted since it was written. I have had to update it and always find it to be a great motivator for me.
There is actually a great post over at Lifehack.org on How to Write a Personal Mission Statement to Make 2008 Your Best Year Ever. Rather than re-hashing what was written over there I want to point you over to it as it is a great article on how to sit down and write your personal mission statement. And you may already be in your dream job and think that you do not need to write a personal mission statement. I urge you to give it a chance though as it can be quite inspiring to do so.
