A perfect example of realizing your dreams and making things happen

Being able to do something that you love for a living is hard work. And sadly for some people it never happens. Or when it does it is not what was expected. For instance my 55-year-old mother had always dreamed of being a flight attendant. While working at a job she hated as a bank teller last year she decided to apply to a job ad for flight attendants and she got it! With my dad’s blessing she left in two weeks for training in Arizona that lasted for about two months. After that she was shipped out to Chicago as a home base with the promise that she could go to her local airport in three months.

She absolutely hated it.

She was stationed out of the local airport for about a month before they told her that they would no longer be flying out of there and she would be sent back to Chicago. That was pretty much all it took for her to toss in the towel.

But there are plenty of people that work toward their dreams and end up loving what they are doing. It seems though that for the most part that the people that reach their dream occupations and love it are the people that are self-employed. Just an observation.

Leo over at Zen Habits announced yesterday that he had quit his day job to be a full-time blogger. I think he is a perfect example of how to make your dreams happen.

I have been a faithful reader of Zen Habits since March 2007. The quality is always top notch so it is no surprise that Leo was able to successfully make the transition to a full-time blogger.

How did he do this?

The first, and rather important, thing that he did was make his intentions known. Over the summer he told readers about his dream to become a full time blogger. He asked for their assistance in the form of donations.

Between now and then it is clear that he was focusing hardcore on this dream. His guest posts have showed up at all kinds of blogs. And he started selling his wildly successful ebook Zen to Done.

And now he has quit his day job. He also says he has something else exciting to announce, which a lot of people think is going to be a book deal.
