Don’t injure yourself when moving to a new apartment - safety when lifting heavy items
Posted by chica with issues under health and wellness issues
Moving from one apartment to another involves a lot of heavy lifting. And if you’re not careful you can end up with a pretty sore and painful back like me. Of course, my injury is more of a stupid injury. You see, I was trying to lift more than I could handle. I knew it was too heavy, but I just wanted to get it over with and get things moved into the new place. My reward is a painful lower back.
So, if you plan on doing any moving or heavy lifting, remember to use safe lifting techniques and don’t be stupid like me!
Here are some pointers on safe lifting and carrying of heavy boxes and other items:
- Remember to bend down instead of stooping over to pick up the object.
- Keep your back straight.
- Try to lift with your legs instead of with your back.
- If it’s too heavy, get a buddy to help you out with it.
- Make sure your walking path is clear of obstacles before you lift the item.
- Wear something on your hands if it helps you to get a better grip (it’s cold where I am so I opted for leather gloves to keep a firm grip)
- Don’t twist your body while carrying the item.
- To put down the item, bend your knees instead of just bending over at the waist.
And keep something like some IcyHot or Tiger Balm on hand just incase you do injure yourself!
