Should you resign if your employer gives you the chance?
I have a few other sites that I run and upon looking at the reports I saw that someone had gotten to one of my sites using the search phrase “how to get employer to let me resign instead of firing me.” This whole concept of wanting to be able to resign instead of getting fired has always fascinated me.
Let me start off by saying that I have never been in this type of situation. Now, I suspect that the majority of people would prefer to resign instead of getting fired because they think it “looks better.” That and the fact that there is shame associated with being fired.
If I were in the situation where a boss says to me “Before I fire you I’m going to give you a chance to resign” guess what I would do - nothing!
Sure, you might want to argue that you would benefit from resignation versus a firing. Why? Because of that pesky little question that shows up on some job applications “Have you ever been fired from a previous position? If so, why?” But I want to argue that the employer is who benefits from this. See, if you resign you can’t get unemployment benefits! Sure, you technically can’t get the if you are fired either. Of course, there is a catch there. It depends on why you were fired. If you were fired because you were no longer needed as opposed to being a slacker at work then you can get unemployment. You may also have a job that says you would not be eligible for re-hire if they fire you but a resignation would make you eligible. Wait - would you want to go back to a place like that and do you really think they would let you if wanted to?
See, I just don’t get it. Maybe I would act differently in the situation. Maybe not. I can’t see any “win” for me to resign in this type of situation though. Unless you can make your resignation note a two weeks notice letter because then they have to pay you for that time.
Is there something I am missing here?
