Smart things to do with your economic stimulus check
Personally I am pretty stoked about getting the “economic stimulus” check. However, I have no plans to stimulate the economy with it. And I actually think that a lot of people feel that way about it.
So, what are some smart things to do with your economic stimulus check?
SAVE IT
–Open a high yield savings account.
You can take that check and put it right into an account with ING Direct, Capital One, HSBC, E*Trade or other online banks. It’s a great way to start an emergency account.
–Put in it an IRA.
Why not get a head start on your 2008 IRA?
–Put it in a mutual fund.
Maybe you’ve already maxed out your IRA. So why not stash the cash in a mutual fund?
SPEND IT
–Home improvements
If you own your own home why not invest the check into some home improvement work? You can increase the value of your home in the process, so its a win-win.
–Send it to your debtors
Why not use the cash to pay down some debt? I’m sure your credit card companies or loan companies will love to see it. Plus you get ahead of the game a little.
GIVE IT
–Donate to charity
Find a worthy cause and give your check to them. They can always use extra money.
–Donate to a presidential campaign
Feeling passionate about a particular candidate? Then you could always support them with your check.
–Give it away as scholarship money
Live in an area where kids need a lot of college money? Then why not have a one-time scholarship where you give the money to a needy kid?
–Give it away in a blog contest
Do some shameless marketing and give it away on your blog or website.
–Buy some canned goods for the food bank
Food banks around the country are hurting. So why not buy up some canned goods and surprise them with the bounty.
So, what will I be doing? Paying a little on debt and giving the rest away.
