Fired for going to a relative’s funeral

Posted by chica with issues under job, career, school related issues

As you may recall, I have been having some issues with my boss. We were clearly different personality types. So, it should come as no surprise then that I have been let go. What will come as a surprise though is the reasoning.

Last week my grandfather died. The funeral was in another state. I told this to my boss and told her that I would be out for three days as a result.

She gave me the third degree about it - including questioning me on the accuracy of the length of time it would take me to drive there.

The end result?

I was let go.

She told me that I “had too many outside interests” and that she “needed someone that could be there when she needed them there.”

Apparently, Time Warner Cable views going to a funeral as ‘having too many outside interests.’

And so, I am unemployed. Again.

Luckily I had been preparing for something like that to happen. So, financially I am cool. And guess what - I’m not looking for another job just yet.

I’ve been making enough money from blogging to cover my expenses while I was working. So, the way I figure it, without a day job in the way I should be able to make even more. And if not, then I will look for another day job!

From what you have posted, it sounds like your boss was a bee-ach and just out to get you. And I have this sneaking suspicion maybe she was a bit threatened by you? Most companies have funeral leave policies. This was her way to remove you from her department. Can you file for unemployment?

As much as it sucks, it’s probably a good thing you are “outta there”. Did not sound like it was a healthy environment for you.

    BB-
I do still have a few weeks that I can get unemployment from where I was on it before. Luckily I had been preparing for something like this so it is not as bad a situation as it could have been.

And yes, I am a bit relieved to have washed my hands of the place!

Is that classed as wrongful dismissal?

Kind of… inappropriate/inconsiderate of her :( You’re better off without!

I suspect it would have been classed as that if I wasn’t technically employed through a staffing agency. See, they just told me that “the project has ended” even though the boss told me the real reason.

It made me mad at the time, but I agree that I am better off. :)

[...] This is what I have been going through the past few weeks. Finding a new rhythm at least mentally. Unlike Madison, or Ms. SVB over at the Digerati Life or Trent at the Simple Dollar, my exit from the 9-5 working life has been a little involuntary. It was also not quite the same as the Snarky Chica’s walking away from corporate life.   [...]
