Some thoughts on saving money on groceries

Posted by chica with issues under money issues

Today I had to run to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things. Now, I am a big fan of making a list and sticking to it so that you can control impulse buying. However, there are times that is to be broken and today was one of those days for me.

Apparently, my grocery store marks down meat on Wednesdays. I highly advise asking when your grocery store does this. I got a steal of a deal on all kinds of meat, but my best deal was on a 7 pound roasting chicken. The original price was almost $12. It was marked down for quick sale today to $9.56. AND there was a “Save $3 if you buy today” coupon attached to it. So I got a 7 pound roasting chicken for only $6.56. Not counting the chicken, I also got some lean meat that will make 7 more meals for us (14 meals total) for a grand total of only $9.64. Was any of this meat on my shopping list? Nope. But it takes care of a whole heck of a lot of upcoming meals for cheap.

So, the lessons here -

  1. Find out when your grocery store puts meat on sale each week (if you eat meat)
  2. Leave room in your grocery budget for taking advantage of these types of deals.

I’m a big fan of shopping the meat discounts at my local stores. One store after 4PM puts any remaining ground beef (sometimes pork, turkey and lamb as well) on discount. The pride themselves on freshly ground beef each day and I can pick up some decent meat at a reduced price. When I’m in full carnivore mode, I end up eating a lot of burger or meatloaf.
