Eating healthy while traveling

Posted by chica with issues under health and wellness issues

It is pretty easy to make sure that you eat healthy when you are at home. For instance, I rarely go out to restaurants as I know how unhealthy the food is. In fact, it has been about 2 months since I have been to a restaurant of any kind. I prefer to eat at home because I know what is in the food!

This weekend I will be taking a long weekend to go out of town. I will be staying a hotel and will not have a kitchen. So that means that I get the challenge of eating healthy when the only options are eating a restaurants for the most part.

I will be traveling by car, which makes eating healthy while traveling a bit easier than if I were flying. So, I plan on leaving home with a little cooler. I have some bottled water that I will be taking as well as some Vitamin Water. Yes, there are unnecessary calories in the Vitamin Water, but if I want to drink something with flavor I would rather have the Vitamin Water than a soda or something equally as bad from a gas station.

I am also taking a loaf of bread, some peanut butter and some jam. Sure, it is not the best meal, but it is better than fast food. Plus, it will be much quicker than stopping for food some place else. I also plan on taking some fruit for snacks and possibly for breakfast. The hotel will have a free breakfast, which will consist mostly of crap. But usually they do have some fruit or some yogurt. And something like Raisin Bran or Cheerios with milk is not too bad of an option either.

I will also have some granola bars to carry around with me for when I get hungry walking around and what not.

So, what about other meals? Sadly, they will have to be spent in restaurants. And the best choice for me is Pax Wholesome Foods. They have some great healthy choices, like a ‘create your own’ salad. But I have a weakness for their tuna sandwich with roasted red peppers. Mmm. If you find your self in New York City, I urge you to try out Pax for healthy eating.

And when I am visiting other places I look for places that are similar to Pax. And Pax is closed on weekends, but in New York there are tons of places with similar foods.

What I do avoid when traveling is definitely all fast food places. And I try to avoid chain restaurants all together.

Hi - I came across your blog and wanted to let you know that you are right about vitaminwater nutrition and its excess calories. Since 25% of a consumers daily calories typically come from beverages, the simplest way to impact that is by reducing the caloric impact of the beverages you drink.

Realistically, nothing is better for you than water. Aside from that, to satisfy your sweet tooth for flavor, I’d like to offer you the opportunity to try TrimWater - a naturally flavored water that is lightly sweetened and enhanced with a nutritional profile that helps with weight maintenance. At only 10 calories and 3 grams of sugar per bottle (that’s right, per bottle), it is a great way to have an impact on those extraneous ‘cola calories’ you are otherwise accustomed to, without sacrificing taste.

Let me know if you are interested by emailing me, and I will have a couple of samples sent to you to try.

    Safe travels and stay healthy!
