Do yoga teachers have to get certified? How to evaluate yoga teachers

Yoga is a pretty popular fitness choice for a lot of people. If you are like me, then this means having an assortment of yoga dvds, flashcards and books. But some people like to actually go to a yoga class or a yoga studio.

That got me to thinking. Do yoga teachers have to get any type of certification to be able to teach? And how do you really evaluate a yoga teacher?

Apparently there are some training programs that yoga teachers go through to get certified. There are a lot of teacher training programs out there, but only some of them are certified by Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance is the professional organization that sets the standards for the industry.

Yoga Alliance certification for teacher training classes have two levels - the 200 hour level and the 500 hour level.

If a yoga teacher has completed either of those certified classes, then the RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) acronym will be listed after their name. Basically, that means that they completed the required Yoga Alliance certified teacher training program.

So, if you are getting ready to look for a yoga teacher, be sure to look for the RYT designation!
