Investing in yourself
I read an interesting article a few days ago on Dolly Parton. What particularly struck me about the article was the following quote from Dolly,
That really stuck with me after reading it. And beginning of the article mentioned that Dolly knew a good investment when she saw it in the mirror.
That got me to thinking - we should all be thinking that when we look in the mirror. And I think that if we remembered this then maybe we wouldn’t end up so miserable a lot of the time.
I know someone that is a stay at home mom whose kids are all in school now. She wants to be a teacher but keeps saying that she “can’t do it” for various reasons, with the main one being the cost of going to school for the degree. It is clear that she is unhappy. If she just realized that she is a good investment, she might be a lot happier.
After I got my graduate degree I felt a lot of guilt about the cost and how it added to our debt. It took me a while to realize that it was okay because it was worth it to invest in me.
Sure, we might not all have the kind of financial security that Dolly Parton talks about, but we do not need it to be able to invest in ourselves. Think about all of those people that move out to Los Angeles to be in movies or television with little money and probably little of anything else. They are confident enough to take the leap and invest in themselves.
I don’t know about you, but the Dolly article was really inspiring to me, specifically the parts I pointed out. It makes me want to take a leap and try something new. What? I don’t know. But I do know of a good mantra to hang up by my mirror in my bathroom.
