The stigma of not having a traditional job or career
I have been unemployed from a traditional job since February. Since then I have been making money from home. In fact, I have been making more from home than I was making at the traditional job. However, most people do not want to hear about it. In fact, they won’t listen when I tell them. They only have one thing that they want to know. Want to know what they ask me?
Have you found a job yet?
Uh, I have a job. It is at home, in front of my computer. The hours are a little longer but the pay and the perks of working from home are much better.
Guess what happens the next time I see them? Yup, they ask the same question again. I also get a lot of off-hand comments about being lazy, that I sleep in and that I don’t do anything all day long.
If you have a non-traditional job then you know what I am talking about here. There seems to be some sort of stigma attached to having a non-traditional job.
I also get calls from people asking me if I want to go and do this or that during the day. They fail to understand that just because I am at home does not mean that I am not hard at work. Recently it was a relative that had taken the week off and wanted to hang out at an amusement park all day. When he called to ask me, he said to me “I know you’re not doing anything…”
I suspect that self-employed people have to deal with this sort of thing as well. And it kind of sucks having to answer the same questions over and over. I have finally realized though that they are never going to get it. As long as I am not sitting in a cubicle they will think that I am lazy and not doing anything all day long. And you know what? That is fine with me!

You hit the nail on the head, any non traditional job that you can do from home makes folks automatically suspect that you spend your days eating Frito’s in front of the TV in your PJ’s.
I work harder when I do get a work from home day that I do at the office. The only perk is I can do my computer work in sweats or PJ’s and that is about it.

Boy do I agree and I am getting a little curt in my responses in this regard.
