Watch out for water treatment plants near your new home
I have lived in my current apartment since February. It is about 20 miles from the place that I was previously living. Basically, it is just on the other side of the city. When I moved here I was not too familiar with this particular area.
I chose this apartment complex for a few reasons. One, it is right off the interstate. Two, there are a lot of grocery stores and Target nearby. Three, they would give me a six month lease without charging me extra. See, I knew that I would be moving out of state this summer. But I did not want to stay where I was already at because it was a crappy place (when it rained water came inside from the roof and the doors), they raised the rent $75 and it was too expensive to begin with.
I was happy with my decision on this complex. It was cheaper than the previous place by $150 a month. It was closer to the interstate (it took 30 minutes some morning just to get the 2 miles to the interstate from the old place). And this was a newer complex so that meant it was probably not as crappy as the old place. Plus they gave me the short term lease with no extra fees.
After living here a while I came to notice a few things though. First, there are three prisons down the street. Yes, you read that correctly. Not one, not two, but three prisons all within about 5 miles. And, as if that is not pleasant enough to think about there is also a water treatment plant nestled in between two of those prisons. Now, if you have never had the privilege of being near a water treatment plant in the morning, let me paint the picture for you.
You get up. It’s a nice spring day. And it’s going to be a warm one. You look out the window. The sun is shining. You can’t wait to get outside. You open the door and are greeted by the overwhelming stench of poop. But wait - as the mornings get warmer the smell only gets worse! Nothing like the smell of sewage on a nice summer morning to really get you going.
So, if you are planning on moving in the future you might want to see how close the nearest water treatment plant is from your potential new home. It’s five miles from me and it smells like it is right next door.
