When to replace your pillows and other items
I am in the process of changing apartments and was trying to find info on things like when to discard cleaning supplies and such and came across some interesting info. Some of the things that you should discard in your household are things that I think a lot of us do not even think about.
Women frequently hear about discarding makeup after a certain length of time. But did you know that antibacterial cream needs tossed after a year? Apparently it starts to lose its effectiveness.
Here are some guidelines on other household items you might not be aware of:
Medicated shampoo (like dandruff shampoo) is good for 3 years before it loses its effectiveness. However, that is assuming that it does not come with an expiration date on the packaging.
Your toothbrush should be tossed every 3 months or so. And if you get sick, then you need to toss it as well! I recently got the stomach flu and had just changed out my toothbrush so I had to toss a practically new toothbrush. The frugal part of me just hated that!
Wear contacts? You should be changing out your lens case as well as your solution every 3 months! I usually just use up my solution till it is gone, but apparently bacteria gets into the bottle.
Do you use a water filter for your drinking water? I use a Brita filter and apparently water filters like that actually are good for about 20% more use than they claim. My Brita pitcher has a little expiration light on it, but apparently it is safe to continue using it for a bit once it starts blinking red!
Vitamins need tossed after 2 years. Of course, I would hope that you are taking them regularly so that they are not sitting in your cabinet for more than 2 years!
When do you replace your pillows? Unless you like dust mites and bacteria that causes odor, you should replace your pillows yearly. If you use some of those allergy protectors on your pillows like I do though you can get by with a pillow every 2 years.
