I wish someone had told me about smart career choices for earning six figures
I got my undergrad degree in English. It seemed pretty logical at the time. I liked writing and had naive dreams of heading off to New York City and getting a job at a publishing house while toiling away on a brilliant masterpiece of a novel at night. I did move to NYC and quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to afford my rent, much less being able to eat if I stuck to the plan. Ring, ring, Real World, Line One.
I really wish that back when I was in college I had seen articles like The Quickest Route to a Six-Figure Job that would have pointed me away from an English degree. It’s turned out to be kind of a handicap. And a lot of jobs see my English degree and assume that I won’t mind being the company proofreader, for no additional pay of course.
Now, I have my MBA and should be making some decent bank. But a lot of job interviews have come up short when my English degree was noted. I have gotten a lot of “if it was just in accounting” or “if it was just in finance” or “if it was just in marketing” and that gets pretty frustrating. How frustrating? In the past I have considered going BACK to school for another bachelor’s in a more appropriate field. Hell, I still think about it and I am self-employed right now! I expect to have to re-enter the workforce though, you know, in the more traditional sense. Sometimes I just wished that the people around me had made me get my head outta the clouds back when I was picking a college major. My youngest brother just entered college. He is majoring in Art. Multiple times I have begged him to be practical and instead minor in Art. The dreamer lives on.
