When I stayed with my relatives, I was about an hour’s drive from the nearest city. For me that was awful. I grew up in a town about 25 miles from the city. But I moved to a city as soon as I turned 18 and have alwas lived in a city since then. I really like being able to go to the grocery store after 9pm if I want to 
Well, my relatives (like a lot of people) live in small towns and at least one of the reasons that they do so is because of the low cost of living. But after being back in a small town I got to wondering if they were really doing themselves any favors.
Housing
Sure, the rent and housing costs are definitely lower in a small town. There is no way I will argue with that.
Food
Food costs are way higher in small towns. I noticed that there is usually only one store. And that store really takes advantage of that fact. In the city, I can get a gallon of milk for around $2.23. In the small town, I hand over a five dollar bill and only get back a few coins for that gallon of milk!
I also noticed a distinct lack of healthy options at the small town grocery store. The produce section was small - super small! And most of the stuff in it was rotten and over priced. There were no berries at all. And that was a bummer for me. There were, however, plenty of salty snacks, sodas, beer and cheap freezer meals. I did not find the Morningstar Farms veggie burgers I wanted though.
Transportation
Ha! No public transportation options in the small town. And gas was about 30 cents higher in the small town than the city.
Employment
Where do these people work? There are limited employment options in the small town. And what job there are can’t pay much. That means having to drive to another place to work - using that 30-cent higher a gallon gas.
So, where is this low cost of living?

I grew up in a fairly small town. As soon as I graduated high school, I left for college in the city. And I have lived in a city ever since. When I was staying with my relatives I was in a small town.
A lot of people say that they choose to live in a small town due to the cost of living. I am not so sure that they are helping themselves. Stay tuned for my observations on this.

Not that long ago eBay made some changes for sellers. One of the changes involved the feedback system.
For some reason, eBay made it so that sellers can ONLY leave positive feedback.
In my experience this has been rather horrible. I have been selling stuff to get rid of clutter. And I have had a lot of problems with buyers and I can’t leave accurate feedback to warn other sellers. I have actually had a lot of people want to treat it like layaway and take two weeks or longer to pay. Yet I can only leave positive feedback or none at all.
Anyone else noticing this that is selling on eBay?
You know, identity theft seems like a pretty scary crazy thing to me. I mean, if someone happens to steal your identity there are not enough checks and balances in place to make it easy for you to rightfully reclaim your identity. I mean, you are always hearing about someone that had their identity stolen and can’t get a job and such because they are having such a problem getting things straightened out with the credit bureaus and what not. Now, before when I had way more debt than I do now, I was not too worried about it. I mean, there was no way that someone was going to steal my identity when I was broke. But now that I am paying things off like crazy I would really hate for someone to steal my identity after I have worked so hard on it. That is where a service like lifelock comes into play. After spending time with my extended family, I have been doing a lot of thinking on finances. Sure, I am in some debt. But noticing how my relatives “needs” were really “wants” made me start to re-evaluate my own needs and wants.
You know what I realized?
I have a few things that I considered “needs” that I can do without. So, I am beginning to downsize my life even more. In fact, I am at a gas station right now using the free wi-fi access. I also plan on getting rid of some clothes and things that I do not need. The end result will be that everything should fit into a smaller apartment, thus saving me some rent money each month!
I cant wait to find more areas of my life that I can “downsize” by identifying needs as wants. I urge you to take the same look at your own financial life today!
